Surgery for a deviated nasal septum

Septoplasty at Kalbakken Clinic

Do you have a deviated septum? A deviated septum can either be congenital or caused by injury or a blow to the nose. In both cases, this can cause reduced airflow through one or both nostrils, sinusitis, or other pain.Adeviated septum operation will help you breathe more easily through your nose, improve your sleep quality, and reduce nasal congestion, sinusitis, and similar ailments.

What does it mean for you to have a deviated septum?

The nasal septum is a thin wall that divides the nasal cavity into two equal parts. If you have a deviated septum, it means that the thin wall (septum) between your nasal cavities is displaced to one side or the other. In many people, the nasal septum is deviated without this necessarily being visible from the outside and without causing any symptoms.

The nasal septum can be crooked in various ways. Most often, airflow is obstructed in one nostril, but the septum can also be S-shaped, obstructing airflow in both nostrils. This makes the nasal cavity(ies) smaller and leads to problems such as a stuffy nose, sinusitis, and sleep problems.

A deviated septum is serious if it blocks one side of the nose, reducing airflow and causing breathing problems. Due to the drying effect of airflow through the nose, the additional exposure caused by a deviated septum may contribute to bleeding or crusting in some people. Nasal blockage (obstruction) can also be a consequence of a deviated septum.

Symptoms of a deviated septum

Most deformities of the nasal septum cause no symptoms, and it is possible to have a deviated septum without even being aware of it. However, some deformities of the nasal septum can cause the following signs and symptoms:

  • Obstruction/blockage of one or both nostrils – can make it difficult to breathe through the nose. You may notice this more during a cold (upper respiratory tract infection) or allergies.
  • Nosebleeds – may occur because the surface of the nasal septum can become dry, which increases the risk of nosebleeds.
  • Facial pain – may be a consequence of pressure caused by a severely deviated/crooked nasal septum.
  • Noisy breathing or snoring while sleeping is also a consequence of a deviated septum.
  • Awareness of the nasal cycle – may be a sign of a deviated septum. The nasal cycle means that the nose normally alternates between being blocked on one side and then switching to being blocked on the other.
  • Specific sleeping preference when sleeping on one's side – Some people prefer to sleep on a specific side to optimize breathing through the nose at night.
